Shop-Vac Vacuums: Models, Specs and Filter Basics

Shop-Vac is best known for wet/dry vacuums, but its range also includes cordless 20V models, ash vacs, a handheld and a backpack vacuum. Cordless runtime tops out at 25 minutes, so this page helps you narrow down the 1 models listed here.

1 vacuum matches

  • Brand: shop-vac

Cordless Shop-Vac models top out at 25 minutes of listed runtime, and the lowest listed weight in the whole range is 3.4 lb (1.54 kg), for a cordless 1-gallon wet/dry vac. That sets expectations: Shop-Vac is a wet/dry vacuum brand, and its own product pages describe cleaning wet or dry messes in the garage, workshop or basement. This page lists 1 Shop-Vac models from the 18-product catalog, with plain-language guidance on how to choose between them. Open any model for its full specification sheet.

What the Shop-Vac range covers

The models we have on record fall into a few groups:

  • Corded wet/dry vacs from a 1-gallon micro model up to 12-gallon tanks, some with stainless steel tanks.
  • Cordless 20V models, from 1-gallon units to a 10-gallon cordless wet/dry vac.
  • Ash vacs for cleaning up cold fireplace or fire pit ash, in corded and cordless versions.
  • A cordless handheld (dry pickup only) and a 1.5-gallon backpack vacuum with a HEPA exhaust filter.

If you are comparing across the whole category rather than one brand, the wet/dry vacuum category page puts wet/dry models from several makers side by side, and our vacuum brands we cover hub shows who else is covered.

Matching a Shop-Vac to the job

Small spills and car interiors. The 1-gallon models (about 3.8 L) are the compact end of the range. The corded micro model is wall-mountable with onboard cord storage; the cordless 1-gallon versions list a maximum runtime of 15 minutes, and the 3.40 lb (1.54 kg) cordless unit is the lightest of them.

Garage and workshop all-rounders. The 5- to 6-gallon corded models (about 19 to 23 L) are the middle of the range. The 5 Gallon 2.5 Peak HP model is listed at 11.7 lb (5.3 kg) with a blower port, top carry handle and caster wheels. Larger 10- and 12-gallon tanks suit bigger jobs, such as flood cleanup or a whole workshop, but are heavier to move: the 10 Gallon 4.5 Peak HP model is listed at 18 lb (8.16 kg). For context, the median listed weight across the brand is 14.64 lb (6.64 kg).

Cordless convenience. The 20V cordless models trade power and runtime for freedom from an outlet. Listed maximum runtimes run from 15 minutes up to 25 minutes (the 5-gallon stainless steel cordless model), with a brand median of 15 minutes. That suits short jobs; for a long cleanup or a large tank of water, corded is the safer choice.

Quieter running. The Ultra Quiet and Whisper Series models are described by the manufacturer as up to 60% quieter than standard Shop-Vac models. That is a manufacturer claim, and we have not measured it.

Fireplace and fire pit ash. The ash vacs are for cold ash only. One corded 5-gallon model uses a stationary metal screen plus a HEPA cartridge filter and has a thermal protective device on its motor. The cordless 5-gallon ash vac adds a heat-resistant hose and metal nozzle for ash below 40 C (104 F). Do not use a regular wet/dry model for ash unless the manual says you can.

Handheld and backpack. The cordless handheld is dry pickup only, with a listed maximum runtime of 15 minutes. The commercial backpack model holds about 5.7 L (1.5 gallons), weighs 19 lb (8.6 kg), and has a padded harness; it is sold as an upright, but it is a commercial cleaning tool rather than a household upright.

Reading peak HP and capacity

Peak horsepower is a comparison label, not operating power. Shop-Vac's own product pages describe peak horsepower as a term used in the wet/dry industry for consumer comparison. Treat 2.5 versus 6.0 Peak HP as a rough tier, not a precise performance gap. Where a listing publishes airflow (CFM), sealed pressure or amp draw, those are better for comparing.

Capacity is in gallons on the box. Our pages show liters and gallons: for instance, 18.9 L is the 5-gallon tank.

For a fuller walkthrough of gallons and horsepower, see what size shop vac you need.

Some figures are less certain. Some figures for this brand come from sources outside the US. Where a model page leaves a figure out, that is deliberate. Confirm key numbers on the manufacturer's page before buying.

Cartridge, foam sleeve or bag: filter types

This is the most common question after the vacuum itself, and getting it wrong costs suction or a clogged filter. Shop-Vac's own filter guide describes the options this way:

  • Cartridge filters are the all-around choice for dry pickup. HEPA cartridges are the finer option for finer dry materials.
  • Foam sleeves are for wet pickup, such as spills or larger amounts of water.
  • Disposable collection bags sit inside the tank for fine dust and debris, and a high-efficiency fine dust bag is sold separately.
  • Reusable disc filters are for dry pickup of larger debris and work together with a foam sleeve.

Always match the filter to your exact model number and check your manual for the setup that fits the job you are doing, because some compact and wall-mount models are exceptions to the general guidance. Our shop vac filters guide explains the types and fit.

Drawbacks to weigh before buying

  • Shop-Vac describes its wet/dry vacs for garage, workshop or basement messes, so check the included hoses and tools if you plan to use one on household floors. If you want a daily-floor vacuum instead, look at Bissell or Dyson for a different class of product, or start from our best vacuum cleaner overview.
  • Peak HP figures are marketing-style comparison numbers and the same tier can perform differently by model.
  • Cordless runtime is short, with listed maximums of 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Warranty terms vary by model and are worded differently across the manufacturer's pages, so check the specific model page rather than assuming.
Can a Shop-Vac pick up water?

Yes, most Shop-Vac wet/dry models can pick up liquids, but not all of them. Shop-Vac's filter guide pairs foam sleeves with wet pickup, such as spills or larger amounts of water. Some products in our 1-model Shop-Vac list are dry-only, such as the cordless handheld and the ash vacs, so check the model's spec page and manual for the correct filter setup before using it on anything wet. The model number printed on your unit is the quickest way to find the right guidance on the manufacturer's site.

What does Shop-Vac 90304 fit?

Shop-Vac's filter guide lists the 90304 as the standard cartridge filter for its 5 to 8 gallon, 10 to 14 gallon and 16 to 25 gallon wet/dry vacs. Small vacs use a different cartridge (90398) and have no listed bag or reusable filter options. The guide recommends cartridges for dry pickup and foam sleeves for wet jobs. Some compact or wall-mount models may be exceptions, so confirm with your vacuum's model number on the manufacturer's site before buying, and be cautious with third-party listings that claim broader fit.

Is Shop-Vac a good choice for home floor cleaning?

It depends on the job. Shop-Vac's product pages describe its wet/dry vacs for garage, workshop or basement messes, and the 18-product catalog on this site also includes household upright, stick and robot vacuums built for floors. A small or cordless Shop-Vac, such as the 1-gallon models with a listed runtime of 15 minutes, can work for car interiors or occasional spills, but check the included tools and the model's spec page first.
