Riccar Tandem Air Premium Pet Upright Vacuum R40P

The Riccar Radiance Premium R40P Tandem Air has a 40 ft (12.2 m) cord, which ranks in the top 10% for uprights in our catalogue against a 9.1 m median. It is also heavy: 22.5 lb (10.2 kg) is in the bottom quarter for uprights here, where the median is 15.19 lb (6.89 kg). Riccar sells this corded, bagged upright as the Tandem Air Premium Pet Upright. Compared with the R30D below it in the line, it adds a wider 13 in head, dirt detection lights, a seven-stage filtration system and a self-cleaning pet tool. Riccar does not publish suction wattage, noise level or bag capacity, so this page flags what is stated and what is not.

Riccar Radiance Premium R40P Tandem Air: long cord, heavy body

The cord is the strongest number here. Together with the 15 ft of hose-and-wand reach, it lets you cover a long room or a staircase without moving the plug as often. The weight is the opposite: a 22.5 lb (10.2 kg) body is fine on a floor and a chore on stairs.

The current US SKU is R40P.8; earlier R40P.4 and R40P.6 revisions exist, which matters if you are matching parts or an older listing. Retailers use "Radiance Premium R40P" and "Tandem Air Premium Pet" for the same machine. It uses two motors, a metal handle tube, brushroll and bottom plate, and a foot pedal, and takes a disposable bag. It is mains-powered with no battery, app or self-emptying base. See the Riccar vacuum cleaner range for the rest of the line, or the corded upright vacuums category to compare with other brands.

Dirt detection, pet tool and brushroll protection

Dirt detection. Two amber lights come on when the vacuum finds dirt and switch off once it has been picked up. They are a cue to keep going over a spot, not a measurement of cleanliness.

Indicators. Beyond the dirt lights, the R40P has a bag-full light and bag and filter change reminders.

Fur-Get-It pet tool. The self-cleaning pet tool is included, which helps with pet hair on upholstery and stairs.

Brushroll protection. A Hall sensor stops the brushroll when it senses a jam, and the belt has lifetime belt protection.

Floor types. Riccar lists it for carpet, multi-surface, bare floor, hardwood and area rugs, with no bare-floor squeegee. As with any upright, check the brushroll setting on delicate floors.

Bag and filtration

The self-sealing HEPA media bag has a charcoal layer, and Riccar describes the system as seven-stage, including a HEPA plus media filter and a granulated charcoal filter. Riccar's page says no dust escapes, but it does not describe the machine as a fully sealed system, and it does not state whether filters are washable. Because it is bagged, expect to buy replacement bags and filter sets over time; check Riccar's accessory listings for the right ones for the R40P.

What the R40P does not tell you

• No performance numbers. Without wattage, airflow or sound figures, you cannot compare it with other uprights on specs.
• Not a lightweight. At roughly 22.5 lb it is built for floors, so stairs mean carrying it.
• Weight varies by source. You will see 22.5 lb and 23 lb; the difference is rounding.
• Revision confusion. Older R40P.4 and R40P.6 listings may differ from the current R40P.8.

Riccar R40P Tandem Air: revisions, bundles and where to buy

Where to buy the Riccar Radiance Premium R40P Tandem Air is less important at first than which one you are buying. The current US SKU is R40P.8, while R40P.4 and R40P.6 are earlier revisions, so check the suffix if you are matching parts or an older listing. Retailers also call the same machine the Tandem Air Premium Pet, and the manufacturer barcode is 098612088998.

Check the contents of the box. The Fur-Get-It self-cleaning pet tool should be included alongside the crevice tool, upholstery tool, dusting brush, hose and telescoping aluminum wand. If a listing omits the pet tool, you are not comparing the same package.

Riccar's page gives a 5-year warranty, plus the Red Carpet Service Plan at participating stores. Weight shows up as 22.5 lb or 23 lb depending on the source, which is just rounding.

As a bagged upright, it needs replacement bags and filter sets over time. In the live offers list, hold revision, tools and service terms constant, then read the spread, which begins at $1,529.99 and tracked prices currently run $1,529.99.

R40P or R30D: what you get for stepping up

The nearest alternative is the R30D, which shares the dual-motor design, 6 height levels, 15 ft reach, Hall sensor and lifetime belt protection. The R40P differs in four ways Riccar documents: a 13 in head against 11.5 in, dirt detection lights, a seven-stage filtration description and the Fur-Get-It tool included. The R30D, in turn, carries a Carpet & Rug Institute Gold Seal of Approval on Riccar's page. If you do not need those extras, the R30D is the simpler option. Riccar sells this machine as the Tandem Air Premium Pet Upright, which has its own page.
